Frequent asked questions (f.a.q)

What is intralipotherapy?
It is a particular injective technique, used for the injection of phosphotidilcoline, which allows distributing equally the active principle in the subcutaneous tissue. It is done with a long needle. In Italy it is off-label.

Which are the indications for phosphotidilcoline?
Phosphotidilcoline is indicated in the reduction of localized adiposities, in particular the bellies, double chin and so on. It can have great results also on cellulites, but in a very fewer patients.

For which indications is the botulinum toxin used?
Surely for mimic wrinkles, the ones between the eyes, the frontal wrinkles and the crow’s feet wrinkles. Besides, it can be also used to modulate the reciprocating strength between the muscles (lifting of the eyebrow and mandibular edge). Then, it has a great effect on excessive sweating, resetting it with a physiological mechanism: so in the sweating of armpits, hands and feet.

What is the commercial name for botulinum toxin?
Botulinum toxin is for aesthetic use; in Italy it is called Vistabex.

What is exactly botulinum toxin?
Botulinum toxin is produced from clostridium botulinum; it penetrates in the neuromuscular plaque and prevents the transmission of the nervous stimulus. It basically reduces the muscular motility.

Which are the most frequent risks of a treatment done with polylactic acid?
Haematomas and edemas of the treated zones are the most frequent risks. Subcutaneous nodules, which were and still remain the major risk, are due to technical errors. Lately, thanks to the improved techniques, this unpleasant inconvenient has been reduced a lot.

What is polylactic acid?
Polylactic acid is a reabsorbable material that has been used in aesthetic medicine for quite some time and it is useful to increase the volumes of face, neck, décolleté and hands, with a formation of new collagen. It is a process called “neocollagenesis”. After 6-8 months, polylactic acid is reabsorbed and the neo-formed collagen remains. It has a great durability, but it has to be done by an expert.

Is it better to get some preparation before a peeling?
It would be better to execute a domiciliary preparation especially to uniform the result. In fact the preparation that will be spread on your face by the doctor will have totally a more uniformed result if the skin is well prepared. Exfoliant lotions are gently used for example the ones composed of Glycolic acid at the 8 – 10 % or Salicylic acid. Moreover the preparation is useful to test the individual reactivity.

After having done a peeling, do I need to take some precautions?
Normally, after a light peeling, only an hydrating lotion is applied, more than once a day, till the completed recovery or till the following session. It is forbidden to take the sun, take away any skin you can see on your face ripping it. It is useful to use a solar filter with high protection, or better a total screen.

Which are the risks for an implant with Hyaluronic acid?
In medicine a substance without risks does not exist. Also water and injective antibiotic can give some problems. The Hyaluronic acid is a non allergic material, well tolerated, actually used by the body as substance to regenerate. However some hematomaes, edemas (swellings), irritating, inflammatory and infective reactions are possible. They last just few hours or at most few days. In every certain case is sure that the Hyaluronic acid is completely reabsorbed and also the collateral effects will go away with it.

What is a filler?
Filler means to fill. It is one of those substances that are used to fill depressions and wrinkles, especially in the face. They are divided in reabsorbable and non-reabsorbable.

What varicose veins are?
Varices, or varicose veins, are dilated or serpigineous veins. Most of the time they affect the lower limbs, but you can see them in many other body parts.

What a chemical peeling is?
A chemical peeling foresees the use of chemical substances as alpha hydroxyl acid, beta hydroxyl acid, trichloroacetic acid or phenol that is applied on the skin. It removes the most superficial layers and give the patient a younger skin, more tonic and without spots.

When a chemical peeling can be done?
Every time there is a cutaneous damage to remove. It is better to do it in autumn and the exposure to the sun should be avoided. In the days after the peeling session the patient needs to follows strict rules for the care of the skin. There is no limitation regarding the age.

Can I use the fillers (filling) if I am allergic?
The fillers in disposal now, in particular the ones composed of Hyaluronic acid, do not require allergic test. However, in the specialistic literature we always read about reactions after the use of fillers, so when I use the fillers that do not need an allergic test and the patient does not have any allergies, I do not require the test. But if the patient tells me he is affected by allergies or particular reactions, I prefer to execute a test: one on the forearm and the other behind the ear. It does not cost that much!

Do absolutely secure substances that I can inject in my skin exist?
No, safe substances at 100% do not exist. Even the safer substance can provoke, in a very small number of patients (4 on 100.000, in the best cases), a reaction. Also sterile water or injective antibiotic can create problems! In my opinion the choice has to be taken on reabsorbable and non reabsorbable substances: if I had to have a reaction and the substance is not reabsorbable, I would have this reaction for long time, while if it is reabsorbable, the substance and the reaction will be reabsorbed in an acceptable time. The safest substances are absolutely the reabsorbable.
